The Micra first entered the supermini segment in 1982. Since that time, there have been a total of five generations to hit the markets. The newest of these models was unveiled in 2016.

Interestingly, the release of the fifth generation represented a huge change in the model’s styling. It almost became hard to compare the latest version to its predecessor, the fourth-gen Micra which was released 2010.

It currently sits at the bottom of the Nissan lineup in terms of sizing.

The Micra originally debuted in the Japanese kei car segment. This meant there was very little on the market in terms of rivalry. One of the only other notable cars in the segment is the Suzuki Jimny.

Because of the drastic changes seen with the fifth generation, its rivals have changed quite a bit. Competition for the new version has typically included the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, and SEAT Ibiza.

Trim levels have changed with each successive generation. The latest of these has consisted of three packages. These are the base Visia, followed by the Acenta, and finally the Acenta Plus.

Nissan has also released high-performance versions called the N-Tec and Tekna at different times in the model’s lifespan.

Powertrains have been appropriately micro-sized for the model. These have included three engines just under 1 L. All of these petrol options feature inline-3 layouts. The latest version also has a turbocharged 1.5 L inline-4 diesel option.

These engines have been mated with either a manual or a CVT. For the manual transmissions, customers are offered either a 5-speed or 6-speed gearbox depending on engine and trim.
