One of the most popular VW models of all times, the Polo, was first released all the way back in 1975. Since that time, a total of six generations have hit the markets.

Similar to other VW models like the Golf, each generation is known as a Mark. The latest of these, the Mk6, was unveiled in 2017.

The model has come in a variety of trim packages. The most notable of these include the Life, Style, R-Line, and GTI.

The Polo has also been offered in a number of body styles. The most notable of these are the 3-door and 5-door hatchback variants but there has also been the 4-door version called the Polo Sedan.

There has also been the GT package since 1981. The first modern GT version came in 2002. These move the Polo into the hot hatch segment.

The Polo is often considered the smaller sibling to the VW Golf. Other rivals include the Renault Clio, Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, and the equally-iconic Ford Fiesta.

Understandably, there have been a number of engine options during its long stay on the market. Powertrains for the latest model have ranged from a 1.0 L inline-3 through to the 2.0 L inline-4 found in the GTI. There is only a single diesel option offered, which is a 1.6 L inline-4.

Powertrains have included both a 5-speed and 6-speed manual, given the affordability of the Polo, as well as 6-speed and 7-speed automatic transmissions.

Volkswagen has not hinted at any plans for hybrid or electric powertrains for the model as of yet.
