The Nissan Frontier was first unveiled back in 1985. In its nearly 40 years on the market, only three generations have been released. The latest of these made its debut in 2014.

However, it has also been sold under various nameplates. These names are Nissan NP300 and Nissan Navara, depending on the market it is being manufactured and marketed in.

The Frontier has featured the typical pickup truck body styles. These are the 2-door regular cab or extended King Cab, as well as the 4-door crew cab.

Trim levels for the newer models consist of the base S, SV, PRO-X, and finally the top-tier PRO-4X which was brought back into the trim options in 2020. The top trim packages are offered exclusively for the 4-door crew cab models though.

Nissan has also released a number of special editions. The latest of these was the N-Guard, which was unveiled in 2021.

Competition for the Nissan Frontier includes the likes of the Ford Ranger, VW Amarok, and the iconic Toyota Hilux.

Various powertrains have been offered, depending on the region sold and generation.

Petrol options range from a 2.0 L inline-4 found in the first generation to the 4.0 L V6 in the second generation. The newest models only have a selection of various 2.5 L inline-4s.

Diesel engines in the third generation include turbo and twin-turbocharged 2.3 L inline-4s, as well as a turbocharged 2.5 L inline-4. Older diesels ranged between 2.5 and 3.0 L inline-4s.

There have been a number of transmission options offered for the model. These have included 4-speed manual and automatic gearboxes in older models, as well as the choice of either a 7-speed automatic or 6-speed manual depending on the trim.
