Volkswagen’s modern entrant into the pickup truck segment, the Amarok, first made its debut in 2010. As of 2022, it is currently on its second generation.
VW has offered the model in the standard 2-door single and 4-door double cab layouts.
Interestingly, the second-gen version of the Amarok is heavily based on the T6 version of the Ford Ranger. The reason this is interesting is that this is one of the model’s biggest competitors. Other rivals include the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Hilux.
VW has offered a select number of trim packages for the model. Since 2022, these have consisted of the base Amarok, Life, and Style.
There are also special editions like the Aventura and PanAmericana versions. Both of these are high-performance variants that are tuned for road and off-road capabilities respectively.
The first iteration of the model offered only two trims, being the base Trendline and Highline, among others until 2021.
There are various powertrains offered by VW for the model. Petrol engines have ranged from a 2.0 L inline-4 in the older generation through to a turbocharged 2.3 L inline-4 found in the second generation.
Diesel options consist of two 2.0 L inline-4s and a single 3.0 L V6. While all of these engines are turbocharged, the smallest offering is twin-turbocharged.
Both manual and automatic transmissions have been fitted to the model. Manuals versions include 5-speed and 6-speed options. Automatic offerings have consisted of 6-speed, 8-speed, and 10-speed transmissions.
There have been indications that a fully electric version of the Amarok will hit the market by 2025.
