The Scirocco was first unveiled in 1974. It then remained on the market for only a few years before its discontinuation in 1992.

Over a decade later, VW decided to bring the model back. Its reintroduction came with the release of the third generation in 2008. This version then received a facelift in 2014.

Unfortunately, it seemed that the 3-door hatchback just could not compete with the legendary Volkswagen Golf, particularly the high-performance versions like the Golf GTI. It was once again taken off of the market in 2017.

Speaking of high performance, VW released the Scirocco with the standard trim, as well as multiple performance variants. This meant that the standard trim range consisted of only the base, followed by the R-Line. Performance versions included the R and GTS, which were released in 2009 and 2015 respectively.

Competition has mainly come from its younger sibling. However, other rivals include the Toyota GT86 and Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC.

There has been a relatively modest amount of powertrain options for the model, particularly in its final generation. These have included a range of 1.4 L and 2.0 L inline-4s in terms of petrol offerings, as well as two 2.0 L inline-4 diesels tuned for varied outputs.

These engines were then mated with either a single 6-speed manual or a 6-speed or 7-speed direct-shift automatic gearbox.

The Scirocco was sold in most regions, with the main exception of North America. Despite VW believing that it would fit the market well, it was not released due to fears that it would increase competition for the Golf GTI.
