Volkswagen has offered the model as both a saloon and estate model since 1973. These are a 4-door and a 5-door configuration respectively.

Despite being a staple of the VW family, Volkswagen announced that the sedan version would be discontinued at the end of 2022. Although the more popular estate is still in production, it will likely be retired fairly soon with the increasing popularity of crossovers.

According to VW, the successor model for the sedan variant is the Volkswagen ID.7, which was planned to be released in 2022.

Competing models from outside of the family line include the Audi A3, BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Honda Accord.

Volkswagen has offered the Passat in a number of trims. These consist of the S, SE, SE with Technology, SEL Premium, and R-Line.

Typical engine options for the newer generations included petrol engines ranging from the smallest offering, a 1.4 L inline-4 , through to the 3.6 L V6. Diesel options consist of various engines from a 1.6 L inline-4 to a 2.0 L inline-4, with newer versions being BiTDIs.

VW also offered a hybrid version called the Passat GTE, which first hit the markets in 2016.

Transmissions for the recent models range from a 6-speed automatic, Direct-Shift, or manual gearbox and a 7-speed Direct-Shift gearbox.
