The Nissan Xterra was a compact SUV that ran from 1999 all the way through to 2015.
It was based on the Frontier pickup truck’s chassis of the time and had an emphasis on ruggedness rather than luxury.
You could also find this platform underpinning the Pathfinder and Armada in one form or another.
This strategy won it both appraisals and criticisms from motoring publications – with one describing it as “a knock-off Land Rover Discovery“.
Nissan embraced this message with their slogan for the car: “Everything you need, nothing you don’t”.
It was offered with two levels of trims and 6 choices of engine, with both gasoline and diesel options available.
You could have your Xterra fitted with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission during the first generation.
Fitted as standard were the sort of features that a good offroader would include such as a roof rack and side step rails.
Later on, the transmission options would be changed to a 6-speed manual and 5-speed automatic in the second generation.
Alongside these new transmissions was an optional differential locker to improve the offroad performance if that was what you were using your Xterra for.
That second-generation model was only offered with one choice of engine, a 4-liter V6 capable of producing 265bhp.
2015 spelled the end of the Nissan Xterra line as the company dropped the model due to poor sales caused possibly by its bad fuel economy and safety rating.
