The CLA, also called the CLA-Class, was first unveiled in 2013. It remained under the Daimler AG group until 2022, when it was taken over by Mercedes-Benz Group.
Mercedes claimed that the model boasted ‘the best launch in 20 years,’ with global sales exceeding 750,000 units for the first generation alone.
Since its release, there have been two generations. The latest of these made its debut in 2019.
As the ‘A’ in its name indicates, this is the smallest model that is in line with the C-Class grade.
Aside from the two generations, there have also been a number of special edition variants. These include the CLA Edition 1, AMG CLA 45, AMG Edition 1, AMG Racing Series, and AMG 50th Anniversary Edition.
There is also the fairly unique Shooting Brake version. This estate variant was unveiled in 2015, but was discontinued with the unveiling of the second generation.
Beside these, the trim levels for the CLA consist of the various engine choices. These have typically ranged from the CLA 180, 200, 220, and 250.
These trims were fitted with corresponding engine options. Petrol engines ranged from a 1.3 L inline-4 through to a twin-scroll turbocharged 2.0 L inline-4.
Diesel powertrains consist of engines ranging between a 1.5 L inline-4 and a 2.1 L inline-4.
These engines were coupled with 7-speed and 8-speed dual-clutch transmissions, as well as a 6-speed manual gearbox for the entry-level engine options.
Competition for the model has typically come from the likes of Audi A3, BMW 2 Series, Acura Integra, and Volkswagen Arteon.
