The Sequoia first hit the North American market in 2000. Since then, it has remained as the one of the largest models in the Toyota SUV family.

In this time, a total of three generations have been offered. The latest of these was unveiled in 2022. Prior to this the second-gen, which was released in 2007, was given multiple updates over the years. The most notable of these came in 2020.

As mentioned, it is one of the largest SUVs offered by Toyota. It used to sit between the 4Runner and Land Cruiser for the North American region until 2021. However, this all changed when the Land Cruiser was pulled out of the American market, leaving the Sequoia as the largest offering available.

Competition from outside of the Toyota family has typically come from Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Jeep Wagoneer, and Ford Expedition.

The trim levels offered for the Sequoia have varied slightly over the years. At present, there are five options available. These consist of the SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD, and Capstone.

These various trim levels have been offered with a fairly limited number of powertrain options. While older versions featured bigger options like the 5.7 L V8, the latest generation is offered with only a hybrid 3.4 L V6.

Fairly typical for models offered in the North American market, there was never a diesel option offered.

This latest engine has been coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Other transmissions include the much smaller 5-speed and 6-speed automatics found in the previous generations.
