The Edge first entered the Ford SUV family in 2006. Since then, a total of three generations have hit the markets. The latest of these made its debut in just 2023, while the second was released in 2015.

Each of these generations, apart from the third, received a facelift. These came in 2010 and 2021 respectively.

Interestingly, the third-gen model was first released in China as the Ford Edge L, which is a fairly common naming convention for Chinese models.

It currently sits near the middle of the pack in terms of the Ford SUV lineup. This puts it between models like the Ecosport and Expedition.

Ford has released five trim levels for the Edge. These consist of the base SE, followed by the SEL, ST-Line, Titanium, and ST. Interestingly, the model was actually named after a trim package for the Ford Ranger.

In terms of competition, it typically faces rivals like the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Jeep Grand Cherokee L.

Engines have ranged in size, but typically represent the Edge’s status as the middle of the pack as an SUV. These used to range from a 2.0 L inline-4 through to a 3.5 L V6. However, trim levels for the latest version have been limited to just a 2.0 L inline-4. With this engine size, Ford offers both conventional gasoline, as well as a PHEV powertrain.

These engines have been mated with a variety of transmissions, which can range from 6-speed to 8-speed. All of these transmissions are automatic though.
