Toyota first released the C-HR in 2018 for the North American region. Only a single generation of the model has been released since then. However, it did receive a facelift in 2019.

It was also brought to the Japanese, European, Asian, and Australian markets around this time.

According to Toyota, its name stands for ‘Compact High Rider.’ This makes sense given its status as a subcompact crossover SUV.

Sitting in this segment has put the C-HR up against a number of very notable competitors. These include the likes of the Hyundai Kona, Honda HR-V, and Subaru Crosstrek. It has also been compared to the Toyota Corolla Cross fairly often.

Toyota has offered a number of trim levels over the years. Currently, these are the XLE, Nightshade Edition, and Limited.

Toyota also used to offer a LE trim level as the base option, but this was discontinued for the 2022 version of the model.

There have been a fairly wide array of engines offered for a single-generation model. These have included petrol, petrol flex-fuel, and petrol hybrid options. There has not been a diesel offering as of yet.

Petrol powertrains have ranged from a turbocharged 1.2 L inline-4 through to a 2.0 L inline-4. Hybrid versions have started with a 1.8 L inline-4 and ranged to a 2.0 L inline-4. The single flex-fuel was based on a 1.8 L inline-4.

These have been mated with either a 6-speed manual, a 7-speed simulated CVT, or the eCVT found on hybrid models.
