Since the mid-1990s the Toyota Tacoma has acted as the Japanese automaker’s entry-level pickup truck.
It was originally classed as a compact pickup truck but as it grew in size it was reclassed as a mid-size pickup truck in 2005.
Toyota had intended for it to replace the Hilux model, a massively popular pickup truck worldwide that was marketing in the US as simply the Toyota Pickup.
After the company had produced this new line they took the chassis and put it under the next generation of the 4Runner.
Previously the 4Runner had used the Pickup predecessor’s chassis and by moving to this new one found itself growing in size to a mid-size SUV.
A premium/luxury SUV was also created using this new platform that Toyota called the Land Cruiser Prado.
This Tacoma was available right away in various configurations with the buyer able to vary the length of the bed and the size of the cab at the point of purchase.
Engine options were more limited than the other big-name pickup trucks on the market at the time but there was a V6 option at least.
Over the decades since its release, the Toyota Tacoma has gone through three generations of design and now features more economical engine options.
2020 brought with it a new facelift for the line that affected both the exterior styling and added new Android and Apple connectivity inside the cab.
