The Fusion first made its debut back in 2006. It then remained on the market until its eventual discontinuation in 2020. During this time, only two generations were released. The latest of these was unveiled in 2013.

While Ford was hoping to make the Fusion a staple of the range, it was announced that the model would be discontinued in 2018. Of course, these plans took a few years to materialize.

During its time on the market, Ford released only four trim levels for the Fusion. These were the base S, followed by the SE, SEL, and finally the Titanium.

Interestingly, there was never a high-performance variant like the ST and RS models found with the Fiesta and Focus.

That said, in 2007, it was reported that a GT variant of the Fusion would make its debut in either 2009 or 2010. However, this version never hit the market.

These models also represented some of the competition for the Fusion. Other competitors included the Honda Accord, Mazda 6, and Chevy Malibu.

Powertrains for the two generations varied quite significantly. This was mainly because the first generation was sold mainly in North America.

This has meant that the various petrol engines have ranged from moderately small to fairly large. These have consisted of engines sitting between a 1.5 L inline-4 through to 3.5 L V6.

Powertrains were typically coupled with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. There were obviously 5-speed gearboxes in the first generation.

Ford also released a hybrid version, called the Ford Fusion Hybrid, in 2010.
