The Aygo first joined the Toyota family as a city car in 2005. The model was actually the result of a joint venture between the Japanese carmaker and PSA Group.

This meant that the Aygo, Citroen C1, and Peugeot 107 (as well as the newer version – the 108) were all pretty much the same vehicle. The main difference between these cars was the badging and styling.

Unfortunately, this joint venture did not do too well on the market because of the declining popularity of the city car class. This resulted in all of the models being discontinued by 2022.

Interestingly, the Aygo was the last of these to be retired. This may have been something to do with the constant praise that the model received over the years, often being described as the best version of the joint venture city car.

Competition from outside of the venture typically came from models like the Hyundai i10, Suzuki Ignis, and Volkswagen up!

During its time on the market, only two generations were released. The latest of these was unveiled in 2014. It then received a modest facelift in 2018.

Trim levels for the Aygo typically consisted of just three options. These were the base Pure, followed by the Edge, and the top-tier Exclusive. There was also a special edition called the Limited Edition.

Engines for the city car have been appropriately small. While the latest version included just two 1.0 L inline-3 petrol engines, there was also a 1.4 L inline-4 diesel offering in the first.

These were mated exclusively with a continuously variable transmission.
