The Outback nameplate first came into existence as part of the Legacy series in 1994.
Since its initial release, a total of six generations of the crossover SUV have hit the various markets. The sixth and latest of these was released in 2020.
In addition to these various generations, there has also been the Outback Sport. This variant was released alongside the Outback but was eventually retired in 2011. It was based heavily on the Subaru Impreza and was geared towards off-road performance.
Of course, these two models have typically faced one another on the market. Other competitors have included the models like the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V. It is also often considered to be one of the main rivals to the Audi A4 Allroad.
While trim levels have changed over the years, the latest version of the Outback has consisted of five standard packages. These are the Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, and Touring.
There are also the high-performance XT versions of the Onyx Edition, Limited, and Touring. These are available with larger engines.
There has also been the Wilderness trim package that was released in 2022.
Of course, all of these Outback models have been fitted with Subaru’s boxer engines. These have ranged from a 1.8 L flat-4 through to a 2.4 L flat-4 for petrol engines, while there is a single diesel option – a 2.5 L flat-4.
These transmissions have consisted of either a CVT transmission or a 6-speed manual gearbox. While these are the most notable, there have been a number of others.
