The Picanto first made its debut in 2003, quickly becoming one of the most popular city cars in the segment. This led to the model becoming a staple in Kia’s lineup. Since then, a total of three generations have been released.
Owing to the model’s success, it was named the most reliable car in the United Kingdom in 2013.
The third-gen version was first unveiled in 2017 and then received a facelift in 2020.
While the city car class has declined in popularity over the past few years, there is still some stiff competition for the Picanto. The most notable rivals include the Volkswagen Up! and Fiat 500. Of course, it is also compared to its cousin, the Hyundai i10 very often.
Kia has offered just three trim levels. These are the Base, Classic, and Comfort, which are also called the 1, 2, and 3 in the UK.
However, there were two variants released later that are worth mentioning. Kia also released the relatively high-performance version, called the GT-Line in 2018.
Just a year later, the X-Line also joined the ranks. This crossover variant debuted in 2019.
Of course, small engines are to be expected when it comes to a city car. This is something that the little Kia does fairly well. In fact, the South Korean manufacturer has offered a whopping five different 1.0 L inline-3 engines for the latest generation alone. Larger engines are capped at a 1.25 L inline-4.
These have been mated with either a 4-speed automatic, 5-speed manual, or 5-speed automated manual.
