The largest offering in Hyundai’s “i” range, the i40 made its debut in 2011. It then remained on the market for a few years before it was retired in 2019. It was a single-generation model as it was succeeded by the Hyundai Sonata for the European market.
Despite this, it did receive a mid-cycle facelift in 2015.
As its name indicates, it sat above both the i20 and i30. It was offered with two body styles. These were either a station wagon or a sedan. While the estate model was offered from the get-go, the sedan variant was only released a year later in 2012.
The large grand tourer was offered in just three trim levels. These were the Active, Style, and Premium.
These various models faced competition from Volkswagen Jetta and its sister car, the Kia Optima. The model was designed with the intention to compete with the Ford Mondeo, which it managed to do rather well during its time on the market.
As a testament to its success, it won the 2011 Eurocarbody Golden Award.
Like most Hyundai models, the i40 has been fitted with a number of petrol and diesel offerings. These consisted of one 1.6 L and two 2.0 L engines. Diesel offerings consisted of a 1.6 L and a 1.7 L. All of these engines were inline-4s.
These engines were mated with either a 6-speed manual or automatic. There was also a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Its discontinuation was the result of slowing sales for cars and wagons. This is, of course, due to the increasing popularity of crossover SUVs.
