The Genesis, now called the G80, was first released under Hyundai back in 2008. It then remained in the Hyundai family for two generations, with the latest and final version under this name coming to the market in 2013.
Then in 2015, Hyundai announced plans to release a luxury sub-brand, called Genesis, with the G80 as their flagship model.
Since the release of the Genesis version, two generations have been unveiled. The latest of these was released in 2020.
This puts the total count at four generations over its decade-plus on the market.
As with a number of Genesis offerings, competition typically comes from other executive offerings from similar manufacturers. These include the Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and BMW 5 Series.
Similar to other executive brands, trim levels for the G80 are based on the engine selection. In addition to this, Genesis also offers a Sport variation. Within these, there are also the Advanced and Prestige options for further upgrades.
Engines have ranged fairly widely for the model over the years and have mainly consisted of petrol offerings. These engines have ranged from a 2.0 L inline-4 through to a 5.0 L V8.
There has typically been only a single diesel option for each generation. These have traditionally been a 2.2 L inline-4.
Genesis and Hyundai have typically mated these with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
There has also been a fully-electric variant called the Electrified G80, which was first released in 2021. It also represents the first EV model under the Genesis brand.
This version is powered by an 87.2 kWh battery and is fitted with a single-speed reduction gearbox.
