The Expedition first made its debut and joined the Ford SUV lineup in 1996. Since then, there have been four generations released onto the market. The latest of these came in 2018.

Since its initial release, it has remained the largest SUV to be offered by the American carmaker. Of course, this puts it above other models like the Ford Escape and Edge.

Competition from other rivals have come from models like the Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Jeep Wagoneer.

Trim levels have obviously changed over the various generations. For the latest iteration, these consist of a whopping 10 various trim levels. These include the base XL STX, XLT, Timberline, Limited, King Ranch, and the Platinum. The other trim levels are the MAX versions of the XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum.

Another notable trim is the FX4, which is an off-road-focused package that was released in 2018.

There have also been variations like the Expedition EL/Max which were released in 2007. These were similar models released on longer wheelbases for Canada and Mexico.

Powertrains have varied slightly over the years. Older generations typically featured two petrol engines. These were a 3.5 L V6 and a 5.4 L V8. However, the latest version is fitted exclusively with a 3.5 L V6.

Newer versions have been fitted with a 10-speed automatic gearbox, while the older generations, including the previous-gen models, have been fitted with various 6-speed automatic transmissions.

Interestingly, Ford announced in 2021 that there are plans for an all-electric version of the Expedition. Although a date was not given, it should be expected sometime before 2025.
