The A3 was first released in 1996 and it has remained a part of the Audi lineup ever since. There have been a total of four generations since then, with the latest of these coming to the markets in 2020.
Like many other small family cars, there have been multiple body styles for the model. The most common is the hatchback. There was also a convertible version that was released in 2003 and a 4-door sedan that was unveiled in 2013.
That said, only the 5-door version of the hatchback and sedan models are available as of the latest generation.
Audi has typically offered the model in just three trim levels. These are the base Premium, followed by the Premium Plus, and the top-tier Prestige.
Of course, there have also been high-performance variants like the S3 and RS3. The latter made its debut in 2015 and remained available until it was retired in 2020.
Competition has come from other executive small family cars. The most notable of these include the VW Golf, BMW 2 Series, Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class. There is also the Acura Integra.
There have been a number of engine options over the years. These have been fairly similar to Volkswagen engines because of VAG Group ownership.
For the latest generation, petrol options have ranged from a 1.0 L inline-3 through to a 2.5 L inline-5. A single diesel engine is offered for the latest generation – a 2.0 L inline-4.
Gearboxes for the A3 have typically been fairly straightforward. Audi has offered either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed S-tronic automatic transmission.
Audi has found great success with the model, often earning high praise. The most notable award that it has won is the 2014 World Car of the Year.
