The Altima first made its debut in 1992 as the replacement for the Nissan Bluebird. It has then remained a staple of the Nissan family ever since.

During this time, there have been six generations released by the Japanese automaker. The latest of these was first unveiled in 2019. This version went on to receive a facelift in 2023.

Interestingly, it was manufactured exclusively in the United States until the release of the fifth-gen model in 2013.

In terms of the Nissan lineup, it currently sits as a mid-size. This puts it between models like the smaller Sentra and the larger Maxima.

Of course, this has meant that these models are often considered as the competition within Nissan. Outside rivals have typically consisted of the Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord.

The trim options for the model have changed over the years. For the modern versions, these have included the S, followed by the SR, SV, SLV, and of course, the Platinum.

There have also been trims like the XV, XL, and XE packages found in various locations.

Powertrains for the Altima have varied fairly significantly over the years, but they have consistently decreased in size. Modern engines have ranged from a 1.6 L inline-4 up to a 3.5 L V6.

Interestingly, engines can be chosen independently of the trim level in question. What’s more, Nissan never released a diesel engine option.

For older models, Nissan offered various manual or automatic transmissions. However, these were changed exclusively to CVTs with the release of the fourth generation in 2007.
