The Q2 first joined the subcompact crossover segment when it was released in 2016. It then remained on the market for just seven years before Audi announced plans for it to be discontinued in 2023.

For most Audi models, each generation cycle is six years long. This meant that only a single generation was released before its second generation was canceled, which likely would have arrived in 2022.

The model was given a facelift in 2020 though.

The Q2 was the smallest SUV offered by Audi, sitting below both the Q3 and Q5 in terms of the SUV family.

Its main rivals obviously came from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. These were the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. The Volkswagen T-Roc is another model that it competed with during its time on the market.

There were three trim packages offered for the Q2. These were the base SE, followed by Sport and S line. There was a special edition called also the Edition #1, which was released 2017.

The 5-door model was fitted with a number of petrol and diesel engines. Petrol offerings start with a 1.0 L inline-3 and up to a 2.0 L inline-4. For the diesel options, a 1.6 L and 2.0 L inline-4 were offered. All of these engines were turbocharged.

These engines were coupled with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed or 8-speed automatic transmission, based on the trim selection.

Audi also released an all-electric version for the Chinese market. This was the Q2L e-Tron, which was unveiled in 2019.

Audi decided to retire the model because of relatively poor sales, as well as the desire to focus more on EVs and larger models in the SUV family.
