The Q5 first entered production under the Audi brand in 2008. Since its release, there has only been one additional generation. This second-gen version was unveiled in 2017.

Each generation received a single facelift, which came in 2012 and 2021 respectively.

As its name indicates, it is the mid-sized offering in the Audi SUV family, which puts it between the Audi Q3 and Q7.

Competition from outside of the family has typically come from Audi’s well-known rivals, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. These are the X3 and GLC-Class respectively. There is also competition with its corporate cousin, the Porsche Macan.

Trim levels for the Q5 are the same as those found with the other models in the Audi SUV family. These consist of the base Premium, Premium Plus, and the Prestige. There is also the sports-focused S-Line variant.

Audi also introduced the SQ5 in 2013. This model represents the only high-performance variant of the Q5, as Audi never released an RSQ5 version.

There have been a number of petrol and diesel engines. Petrols have ranged from a 2.0 L inline-4 up to a 3.2 L V6. Diesel options range accordingly, but only go up to a 3.0 L V6 for both models.

Audi has also offered various PHEV and MHEV models with specific engines since 2012.

Transmissions ranged from 6-speed automatic and manual gearboxes. There are also a number of 7-speed and 8-speed options.

The second-generation of the Q5 was very well received. It even went on to be awarded the 2020 Best Buy in the compact luxury SUV category, which marked the third time it had received the award.
