The Highlander first entered the market back in 2000. Since then, a total of four generations of the crossover have joined Toyota’s SUV lineup. The latest of these made its debut in 2019.
The model has also been sold as the Kluger in certain regions.
In terms of the Toyota family, it sits just above the legendary Toyota RAV4. This has led to some competition between the two models. In fact, the Highlander was the best-selling Toyota SUV until its crown was stolen by the RAV4 in 2006.
Competition from outside of the Japanese carmaker has typically come from models like the Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, and Kia Sorento.
Toyota has usually offered five trim options for the various generations. These have consisted of the base L, LE, XLE, and finally the Platinum. There has also been the SE trim that has a number of features for improved off-road capabilities.
While not technically a trim level, Toyota also released a larger variant called the Grand Highlander in 2023.
For the previous generations, engines have typically ranged between a 2.4 L inline-4s to a number of 3.5 L V6s. However, powertrains for the fourth generation models include a 2.4 L turbocharged inline-4 and 3.5 L V6.
Interestingly, there has never been a diesel version to be released.
Transmission options for the latest generation have included an 8-speed DSG, as well as an eCVT for hybrid models. There have also been other options like a 6-speed automatic in previous versions.
Another interesting feature of the Highlander is that it has sported hybrid tech for nearly two decades, which is far before many other manufacturers. This all started with a model update in 2005.
