The 86 first made its debut in 2013. Since that time, only two generations have hit the markets. The latest of these was unveiled in 2021.
This is also when Toyota decided to rename the model to the GR86, now falling under the Gazoo Racing (GR) division, which is Toyota’s high-performance brand. This is where the new name came from.
The model began its life as a joint venture by Toyota and Subaru which led to the manufacture of both itself and the Subaru BRZ. Of course, this has meant that these two models are often compared to and rival one another.
The Japanese 2+2 sports car segment is a fairly small one. This has meant that the only other competition for these models comes from the legendary Mazda MX-5 Miata. It could even be fair to say that these models were produced with the intention of dethroning the Mazda offering.
Trim levels for the 86 have typically been limited to just three. These are the base version, followed by the GT, and finally the TRD Special Edition.
Upon the release of the GR86, these were further limited to just two – the base version and the Premium.
Besides the standard trim levels, there has been an extensive list of special edition variants over the years. The most notable of these is the SOA 50th Anniversary Edition, which was released in 2018.
To offer appropriate power, Toyota has offered the model with only two powertrains over the years. These are the 2.0 L H4 found in the first generation and the 2.4 L H4 found in the later version. The choice of boxer engines, of course, came from the joint nature with Subaru.
These engines were then mated with either a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
