The hydrogen fuel cell powered Nexo first made its debut in 2018 when it entered the crossover SUV segment. Of course, there has been only a single generation to hit the markets since.

Hyundai announced that it would become the flagship model of the Korean carmaker’s ‘eco car’ family.

It is currently sold in North America, the UK, and some other markets. Australia received the model for special order leases in 2021.

The Nexo is based heavily on the Hyundai Tucson, which is also called the ix35 in some markets. Some have even considered the Nexo to be its successor, particularly for the Tucson FCEV.

While the model represents a step forward in environmentally friendly cars, it has not received the best reception for a number of reasons.

Its counterparts, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Ford Mustang Mach, and VW ID.4 are all considerably cheaper than the Nexo, and conventional petrol or diesel models are even cheaper still.

Another issue that the Nexo is facing is its fueling situation. While more electric refilling stations are popping up across the world, there are still only a handful of hydrogen stations.

Hyundai offers the model with just two trim levels. These are the base Blue, and the premium Limited. One of the main differences between the two is the estimated mileage. While the Blue trim has an estimated range of 380 miles, the Limited sits around 354 miles.

The Nexo is powered by a 120 kW hydrogen motor.

The model managed to win a 5-star rating by the Euro NCAP in the year of its release.
