Hyundai’s first car to be fully designed and built for the hybrid and electric market, the Ioniq made its debut in 2016.

This model also started the Ioniq marque, which is now used for a number of models like the Ioniq 5. There were also two cars under this original nameplate.

These are the Hybrid and Electric. Of course, only the Hybrid variant requires engine coolant. The hybrid versions are conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The PHEV variant was unveiled in 2017, a year after the initial debut.

Because of the Ioniq name being used for the ever-increasing range of cars, Hyundai decided to retire these models in 2022.

Trim levels offered by Hyundai consisted of four options. These were the base Hybrid Blue, Hybrid SE, Hybrid SEL, and Hybrid Limited. These were the same trim levels for the PHEV variant as well.

The Hybrid model was powered exclusively by a 1.6 L inline-4 which was coupled with a 32 kW AC synchronous permanent magnet motor.

This powertrain is capable of delivering two power outputs when using the engine alone or in combination. These are 78 kW and 102 kW respectively.

This model was fitted with only a single transmission option – a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The HEV is also fitted with a 1.56 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery.

Due to the increase in hybrid vehicles lately, there is quite a fair bit of competition for the Ioniq Hybrid. Of course, it is often compared to the Toyota Prius and its sister model, the Kia Niro.
