The Elantra first made its debut in 1990 and has remained on the market ever since. In its time, there have been a whopping seven generations to be released. The seventh and latest of these was unveiled in 2020.
Each generation also received at least one facelift during its stay on the market.
The model has gone by a number of names over the years. These include the Avante and Lantra, the former of which was discontinued in 2000.
Hyundai also recently debuted the i30 Sedan in 2020, which is essentially the same model.
Competition from outside of the Hyundai family has mainly come from the likes of the Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Volkswagen Jetta, and Nissan Sentra. There is also its corporate cousin, the Kia Forte.
The latest version of the model has been offered three trim levels. These are the base SE, SEL, and Limited. Hyundai recently added the Elantra to its high-performance range with the unveiling of the Elantra N in 2021.
These various trim options have come with a wide array of engine options. These have typically consisted of engines ranging from a 1.4 L inline-4 through to a 2.0 L inline-4. All models produced recently are fitted with either petrol or hybrid powertrains.
The last diesel offering was a 1.6 L inline-4 that was found before the facelift of the sixth-gen model.
These powertrains have been mated with a number of transmissions. These include various manual, automatic, dual-clutch, and continuously variable transmissions. These have typically had either 6-speed or 7-speed gearboxes.
