The Crown Victoria, more affectionately known as the Crown Vic, first made its debut back in 1991. It then remained on the market until its retirement in 2012.

During its time on the market, only two generations were released. The second and final generation was unveiled in 1998.

Trim levels were extremely limited for the Crown Victoria, consisting of just two options.

These were the base and the LX. Interestingly, the base version was almost entirely used for fleets like taxis and police cars. This essentially meant that only a single version was offered to the public.

The main rivalry for the model came from the Chevrolet Caprice. Other notable competitors included the Mercury Grand Marquis and the Lincoln Town Car.

The Crown Vic saw a fairly standard life during its time on the market. It was fitted with only a 4.6 L Modular V8 engine, which was exclusively coupled with various 4-speed automatic transmissions.

While most vehicle models are eventually discontinued by the company making them, the Crown Vic was truly retired. This is mainly because of its long history being used as a police interceptor vehicle, as well as public taxis.

While it is no longer used by the police force, there are plenty of Crown Vics still on the road in fleets, particularly as taxi cabs. This is likely because it was offered between 2002 and 2011 in a long-wheelbase for taxis.

Its retirement came as a result of the Ford Five Hundred’s release, which came in 2005.
